The Cochin International Airport-India's Greenest Airport

The science is evaluating rapidly at a faster pace than ever before. And we are seeing this scientific and technological revolution which is never before known by anything we have previously observed as species.

However, the human being is paying significant price for this unmatched development. Now the Climate change and global warming are some the most important challenges the world currently facing. Carbon di oxide is a main cause behind global warming and we are burning fossil fuels for our energy needs which is a main source of dangerous carbon emissions. So we need urgently a cleaner and greener energy source.

In India, Kerala is a small state located at southwest coast of the country. It is known for its natural beauty and also called as “God Own Country”. This state is also famous for world’s greenest airport, Cochin Airport. It will become the first kind of airport in the world where it will completely create its power needs by solar energy.

On August 18, The Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) announced that the airport will completely function on solar energy and will become the world’s first greenest airport. It is the fourth largest airport in India in terms of passenger traffic and requires 48000 unites of electricity per day.

The airport is spread over 1,500,000 square feet of terminal space alone and in order to generate enough power to function authorities have to build 12 MW solar plant. The solar plant is spread across 45 acres and comprises 46,150 solar panels. The plant has enough capacity to generate 50,000 to 60,000 units of electricity per day
.
The CIAL spent 10 million dollars to construct this solar plant and will be able to recover the amount in next 5 years. The solar panels can last up to 25 years, so the next decades will be significant savings for the airport.CIAL is also planned to sell surplus energy to Kerala Electricity Board, a state owned local electricity provider.

The plant will help to reduce global warming by creating green energy and will be able to prohibit 3, 00,000 tons of carbon emission which is equivalent to carbon emission of coal fired power plants in next 25 years.
